A good deal usually comes down to flexibility rather than luck. If your dates can move, comparing a few nearby days often reveals a lower price, and shoulder-season travel — just before or after the busy months — tends to be cheaper and quieter. Booking a little in advance helps on most US routes, though last-minute fares occasionally appear when airlines have seats to fill.

What affects the price

• When you book — mid-week and a few weeks out are often steadier than peak weekends.
• Nonstop vs. connecting — a single stop can lower the fare when time allows.
• Cabin and fare type — Basic fares cost less but include fewer extras; Flex fares add flexibility.
• Baggage and seats — add only what you need, and prepay bags to save over airport rates.
