Cheap flights, judged on the whole trip

A cheap flight is a low total, not a low headline

Results pages lead with one number, but what you spend on a trip comes from several places. Before choosing, add up the fare, taxes, our service fee, any bags you need, and what it would cost to change plans. Two fares that look far apart can end up close once those lines are added.

Where lower fares tend to come from

• Flexible dates — mid-week and off-peak days often have more low-priced seats.
• Nearby airports — many cities have more than one, and fares can differ for the same dates.
• One stop instead of nonstop — on busy routes, a connection often prices lower.
• Less popular times — very early and late departures can be cheaper.

None of these is guaranteed on a given route. Search your dates to see what is actually available.
